'Was not invited': Mamata Banerjee amid row over Visva Bharati's centenary celebration invitation

Kolkata/IBNS: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said she was not invited to the centenary celebrations of Visva Bharati University, refuting the claims made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Addressing media at the state headquarters Nabanna, Banerjee said, "When did they invite me? Will I have to agree with everything what BJP says? I have an office. I have no knowledge of it."

"I have not been invited in the centenary celebrations," she said.

"I have tweeted myself. I congratulate and honour all great people who came out of the university. People, who are running the show now, are temporary. Their days are numbered," the CM said, triggering a new row in the already heated-up poll bound state.

Earlier, West Bengal Minister Bratya Basu claimed Banerjee was invited at the very last moment, suggesting it was disrespectful for her to attend the celebrations.

Countering the claims made by the ruling Trinamool Congress and the CM herself, BJP leader, who is in charge of West Bengal for the elections, Amit Malviya shared online an invitation letter, dated Dec 4, sent to Banerjee.

On the centenary celebrations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday morning addressed the central university, which was founded by Nobel laureate poet-writer-composer Rabindranath Tagore.
