Sushma Swaraj congratulates Ram Nath Kovind following Presidential candidate nomination

New Delhi, Jun 19 (IBNS): External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Monday congratulated Bihar Governor Ram Nath Kovind following the latter's nomination as a Presidential candidate.

Kovind was nominated by the NDA government earlier in the day.

"Heartiest congratulations to Shri #RamNathKovind ji on his nomination as our candidate for the office of President of India," Swaraj's tweet read.

Meanwhile, reacting to Kovind's nomination, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that she is a bit surprised with NDA's choice.

"I am not for a moment saying that the Bihar Governor Ram Nath Kovind is unfit to be the President. I have spoken to 2 or 3 other Opposition leaders, they are also surprised. There are other big Dalit leaders in the country. Just because he was the leader of Dalit Morcha of BJP they have made him the candidate," she said.

Banerjee added that the TMC will only declare their candidate's name following a meeting with the other opposition team on June 22.

TMC's Chief National Spokesperson Derek O'Brian also took a jab at the NDA and mocked Kovind's virtually unknown status.

In a tweet, O'Brian said, "How many of you logged onto Wikipedia today ? I did. #RamNathKovind."
