Storage status of 91 major reservoirs of India
New Delhi, Apr 13 (IBNS) With summer temperatures soaring, the Union Ministry of Water Resources announced on Wednesday the storage status of 91 major reservoirs in India for the week ending on Apr 7, 2016.
The water storage available in the 91 major reservoirs during the said period was 37.92 BCM, which is 24% of total storage capacity of these reservoirs, and 69% of the storage recorded during the corresponding period in 2015 and 77% of storage of the average recorded in the past 10 years.
The ministry also announced that the total storage capacity of these 91 reservoirs is 157.799 BCM, which is about 62% of the total storage capacity of 253.388 BCM estimated to have been created in the country.
Of the 91 reservoirs, 37 have hydro-power benefit with installed capacity of more than 60 MW.
The ministry has provided a region-wise status, which shows that in nearly all regions, storage during current year is less than the corresponding period of last year and is also less than the average storage reported in the past 10 years.
NORTHERN REGION
The northern region includes Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Rajasthan. There are six reservoirs under CWC monitoring with total live storage capacity of 18.01 BCM. The total live storage available in these reservoirs is 4.25 BCM, which is 24% of total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during corresponding period of last year was 34% and average storage of past 10 years was 30% of live storage capacity of these reservoirs.
EASTERN REGION
The eastern region includes Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal and Tripura. There are 15 reservoirs under CWC monitoring having total live storage capacity of 18.83 BCM. The total live storage available in these reservoirs is 6.81 BCM, which is 36% of total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during corresponding period of last year was 48% and average storage of past 10 years was 38% of live storage capacity of these reservoirs.
WESTERN REGION
The western region includes Gujarat and Maharashtra. There are 27 reservoirs under CWC monitoring having total live storage capacity of 27.07 BCM. The total live storage available in these reservoirs is 5.52 BCM, which is 20% of total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during corresponding period of last year was 38% and average storage of past 10 years was 42% of live storage capacity of these reservoirs.
CENTRAL REGION
The central region includes Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. There are 12 reservoirs under CWC monitoring having total live storage capacity of 42.30 BCM. The total live storage available in these reservoirs is 13.27 BCM, which is 31% of total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during corresponding period of last year was 41% and average storage of past 10 years during corresponding period was 28% of live storage capacity of these reservoirs.
SOUTHERN REGION
The Southern region includes Andhra Pradesh and Telangana (with two combined projects in both states), Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. There are 31 reservoirs under CWC monitoring having total live storage capacity of 51.59 BCM. The total live storage available in these reservoirs is 8.08 BCM, which is 16% of total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during corresponding period of last year was 25% and average storage of past 10 years during corresponding period was 27% of live storage capacity of these reservoirs.
States having better storage than last year during the same time period are Andhra Pradesh and Tripura.
