SC refuses to hear PIL seeking checking of 100 per cent VVPAT slips

New Delhi, May 21 (IBNS): The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to hear a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking a 100 per cent matching of Voter-verified paper audit trail (VVPAT) slips with Electronic Voting Machines (EMVs) while counting of votes for Lok Sabha polls on May 23, media reports said.

A vacation bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra refused to entertain the plea which has already been dismissed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi.

On May 7, the Supreme Court rejected 21 anti-ruling parties' request to increase the counting of VVPAT machines from five to 25 per cent in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections.

A bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi, dismissed the review petitions.

On Apr 8, the Election Commission had argued during a hearing that the poll results will be delayed by five days if 50 per cent of total VVPATs are counted.

In its judgement, the Supreme Court had then increased the counting of paper trail machines from one to five, which didn't satisfy the club of opposition parties that had filed a review plea.
