SC asks Delhi Govt to present roadmap on phased removal of diesel cabs

New Delhi, May 3 (IBNS) The Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the Delhi government to submit a detailed plan after it moved the court asking for the ban on non-CNG taxis to be implemented in a phased manner, reports said.

The Delhi government made the move citing law and order problems after massive jams were reported in the city with cab drivers blocking the major highways for a second day on Tuesday..

The Delhi government, which has been asked to file its recommendation on implementing the ban by 4 pm on Tuesday, has also asked for more time for taxis to convert to greener compressed natural gas (CNG).

"We are fully committed to tackling pollution in the capital but a crisis has arisen," Delhi government's lawyer told the court.

Protests by cab drivers blocked major highways including the Delhi-Noida expressway causing heavy traffic jams.

The court on Saturday had refused industry requests to extend the deadline it had set for taxis to switch from diesel and petrol to greener compressed natural gas (CNG).
