Reports on CWC based on rumours, Rahul Gandhi to continue, says Congress
New Delhi, May 27 (UNI) In the wake of reports on Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s resignation and the war of words among the top leadership on the party's debacle in the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls at the meeting of the Congress Working Committee, the party, on Monday, clarified the reports are based on speculations and rumours which is ‘uncalled for and unwarranted’.
In a statement issued by party’s communication incharge Randeep Singh Surjewala, the party said that it expected everyone including media to respect the sanctity of a closed door meeting of the CWC.
“Various conjectures, speculations, insinuations, assumptions, gossip and rumour mongering in a section of the media is uncalled for and unwarranted”, Surjewala said.
At the CWC meeting held on Saturday, Gandhi had offered to resign as Congress president.
The party leaders, however, rejected it unanimously and asked Mr Gandhi to continue.
A section of media reported that Gandhi is adamant on his resignation and the leaders were unwilling to accept it citing the challenges party is facing in the ‘ideological battle’.
Ending the speculation over the resignation, Surjewala clarified that “the CWC looked at the reverses in the Lok Sabha elections as an opportunity for radical changes and a complete organisational overhaul, for which it authorised the Congress President, Rahul Gandhi”.
He added that the CWC did not put the onus of poll debacle on any individual, but held collective deliberations on the performance of the party.
“CWC held a collective deliberation on the performance of the party, the challenges before it as also the way ahead, instead of casting aspersions on the role or conduct of any specific individual”, he said.
The Congress had ended up with 52 seats against BJP’s massive 303 in the Lok Sabha polls triggering widespread criticism against the party leadership and subsequently Gandhi had offered his resignation.
Taking moral responsibility of the defeat, at least six PCC presidents- Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Assam, Punjab, Odisha and UP- resigned from the posts.
District Congress president of Amethi, where Gandhi was defeated by BJP’s Smriti Irani, has also resigned.
