Rahul Gandhi sticks to decision to step down as Congress president
New Delhi, June 20 (IBNS): Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday made it clear that he would stick to his decision to step down from the post of the party chief and would not be involved in the selection process of the new party chief.
"I am not going to get involved in that process, otherwise it will complicate things and the party has to decide," he told NDTV, adding that there has to be "accountability in the system".
Days after the party's terrible performance in the Lok Sabha election, Rahul took "100 per cent" responsibility and said he would step down. However, many party functionaries said they would like him to continue. Some leaders even argued that only members of the Gandhi family would hold the Congress together.
Rahul has not agreed to this and even said his mother Sonia or sister Priyanka could not be given the reins of the party.
The Congress party this time got only 52 seats, the number only marginally up from 44 in 2014.
According to media reports, efforts were on to make Rahul Gandhi the party leader in the Lok Sabha. When he refused, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury from Bengal got the post.
