Pilibhit killings: Court awards 47 policemen life imprisonment

| | Apr 05, 2016, at 12:23 am
New Delhi, Apr 4 (IBNS) A special CBI court on Monday awarded life imprisonment sentences to 47 policemen, pertaining to the 1991 Pilibhit Fake encounter case, reports said.

On July 12 1991, a group of 57 policemen stopped a bus carrying Sikh pilgrims, in Uttar Pradesh's Pilibhit and asked 10 passengers to alight. They were later taken to a jungle and  were shot dead.

Following this encounter, the police had claimed that the men were terrorists and were carrying arms.

An investigation by the CBI later dismissed the claim, stating a motive behind the fake encounter.

The CBI had said that the policemen wanted to earn accolades and preyed on the helpless men.

While 10 policemen have already died in the course of time, the remaining 47 received the penalty.
