Opposition picks Vandana Chavan as Rajya Sabha deputy speaker candidate

New Delhi, Aug 7 (IBNS) The opposition has picked  57-year-old Vandana Chavan from Sharad Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) as the candidate for the post of Rajya Sabha Deputy Speaker, media reports said.

Elections for the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha will be on Aug  9.

The BJP-led NDA government candidate for the post is Harivansh Narayan Singh. He belongs to Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal-United..

Vandana Chavan was born in Pune, where she spent her early childhood. Her father, Late. Vijayarao Mohite was a well known lawyer and mentor to many leading criminal lawyers and her mother Jayashree Mohite retired as a part-time Lecturer in law.

She is married to Hemant Chavan, another well-known lawyer.
