Mumbai: Bus strike enters Day 2
Around 26,000 drivers and conductors went on a flash strike on Tuesday to protest against the new computerised scheduling system that assigned longer duty hours to them.
Though the Bombay High Court on Tuesday ordered them to call off the strike and to resume work by 5 pm, the drivers and conductors continued with their protest causing trouble for Mumbaikars.
According to latest data available, the BEST runs a total of 4,680 buses, ferrying 4.8 million passengers over 365 routes, and has a workforce strength of 38,000, which includes 22,000 bus drivers and conductors (this comes to an average of 11.2 employees per bus).
