Modi has become a symbol of 'untruthfulness': Congress
New Delhi, May 9 (UNI): After a group of former Indian Navy officers refuted Narendra Modi's charge that former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi had used INS Viraat warship as "personal taxi" for vacations, the Congress on Thursday hit back at him, terming the current Prime Minister as a symbol of falsehood and untruthfulness.
Talking to reporters here, Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said, "If there is a symbol of truth in this country, that has been Raja Harishchandra. With the kind of lies, lies and lies, repeating day in and day out by no lesser person than the prime minister himself. Unfortunately, he ... has become a symbol of falsehood and untruthfulness. It is a sad day for India."
His comment came after former Navy Chief Admiral L Ramdass who was the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Eastern Naval Command issued a press statement in response to the prime minister's rally at Ramlila Maidan on Wednesday, claiming that Gandhi had used INS Viraat for a personal cruise lasting 10 days to Lakshadweep island, with his family and the members of the family of his wife Sonia Gandhi.
Alleging the prime minister of being involved in distorting the facts and spreading falsehood, senior Congress leader demanded an apology from him to the nation.
"I ask you the prime minister through this press today when this will stop. When will this distortion, falsehood and fakehood stop. We know that you will not apologise although you should - forget Rahul Gandhi and forget the late lamented dead prime minister Rajiv Gandhi. But at least apologise to this nation. We know that your attempts to divert, digest and derail the real issues including demonetisation, jobs, agricultural distress and Rafale have miserably failed," Singhvi said.
However, he maintained that the Congress is mulling to take legal action against the prime minister.
"We have reserved all the legal rights and we have also reserved the rights to go to the election commission. But the point remains, this government, this prime minister and a set of people governing us have been shamefully exposed," Singhvi added.
At Wednesday's rally, Mr Modi -- who has accused the Congress and other opposition parties of neglecting national security -- cited Rajiv Gandhi's use of the warship as an instance.
Days before, Modi came under criticism for his comment that Rajiv Gandhi died as "Bhrashtachari (corrupt) number 1".
