Kolkata: Truck plunges into Santragachi lake, driver, helper go missing

Kolkata/IBNS: A truck plunged nearly 50 ft off a rail over bridge (ROB) into a lake at Santragachi in Kolkata's twin city Howrah on Saturday early morning, reports said.

According to reports, a Kolkata to Santragachi bound over speeding truck suddenly lost its control while climbing the rail over bridge near Santragachi Junction railway station (SRC) at around 4 am and fell into the lake.

"The truck first hit left side's railing, then turned right and rammed into another railing on the opposite side," an eyewitness said.

"After smashing the concrete railing, it fell off the bridge into Santragachi lake," the man added.

Later, local police and fire and emergency services officials rushed to the scene and after a three-hour-long effort, the truck was recovered from the lake with high-capacity hydraulic cranes.

Police said that driver and helper of the truck were missing.

"Our divers carried out underwater searches, but could not trace either the driver or the helper. Our search operation is on to find them," a Howrah City Police official said.
