Kanpur: A PhD student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) here committed suicide, police sources said on Wednesday.

The hostel security was informed on Tuesday night that the room of PhD student Prashant Singh was locked from inside and he was not opening the door.

"When the security opened the door, they found Prashant hanging from the ceiling. The student was taken to the health center where doctors declared him dead," a police officer said.

An IIT spokesman said that before enrolling in the PhD programme, the student had taken admission in IIT-K to complete his Masters in 2019.
