PM Modi at Red Fort: Viksit Bharat, self-reliance and youth power dominate 80th Independence Day address

This was Modi’s 13th consecutive Independence Day address from the Red Fort. The celebrations this year have been centred on the theme “Yuva Shakti for Viksit Bharat@2047”, while also marking 150 years of Vande Mataram.

In his address, Modi emphasised the need to accelerate India’s development and strengthen domestic capabilities in strategic sectors. He highlighted areas including critical minerals, energy security, semiconductors and advanced technology as important pillars of India’s future growth.

The Prime Minister reiterated the government’s vision of making India a Viksit Bharat by 2047, when the country will mark 100 years of Independence, while calling for greater participation by the country’s youth in innovation, entrepreneurship and nation-building.

Modi also invoked national pride and unity, saying that “every heart is beating with the rhythm of Vande Mataram.” The national song was rendered at the Red Fort celebrations for the first time as part of this year’s special programme.

He paid tribute to the freedom fighters and acknowledged the contribution of citizens to India’s progress. The Prime Minister also referred to challenges facing the country, including recent natural disasters, and assured affected families of government support.

The address comes a year after Modi’s 2025 Independence Day speech, which focused heavily on self-reliance, defence, energy security, GST reforms, employment and strategic manufacturing. This year’s message again underlined Atmanirbharta, but with a stronger emphasis on the next generation of technology and India’s long-term development ambitions.
