J&K: Tree falls on cable car rope in Gulmarg, 5 killed

Srinagar, June 25 (IBNS): At least five people were killed when a tree fell on the ropeway, bringing down one of the cable cars, in which they were travelling in Gulmarg area of Jammu and Kashmir, to the ground on Sunday, media reports said.

The service has been reportedly suspended following the incident.

The victims have been identified as Jayant Andraskar, his wife Manshea Andraskar and their daughters Anagha and Janhvi, reports said.

Their guide was Mukhtar Ahmad Ganai, senior superintendent of police in Baramullah, Imtiyaz Hussain, told Hindustan Times.

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah mourned the loss of lives in the incident as he tweeted: "Heart breaking images coming out of #Gulmarg . What a tragic way for a family holiday to end. Can't sympathise enough with the families."

Gulmarg is a town, a hill station, a popular skiing destination and a notified area committee in the Baramula district of the Indianstate of Jammu and Kashmir.
