BJP eyes Assam hattrick, Puducherry comeback; LDF faces Kerala test

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) faces a key electoral test as Assam, Kerala, and the Union Territory of Puducherry go to the polls on Thursday.

Assam Campaign

BJP, completing its second term in Assam, is aiming for a hattrick under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The campaign has been marked by a mix of promises and controversies.

The ruling party has pledged implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), eviction of illegal immigrants, creation of two lakh jobs, and distribution of two LPG cylinders, among other initiatives.

The Congress, on the other hand, has criticized BJP for indulging in "hate politics" and raised questions over the passports held by Himanta Biswa Sarma's wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, claiming she holds citizenship documents from India, the UAE, and Egypt.

BJP’s Push in Kerala

In Kerala, where elections are primarily between the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), BJP is striving to make its presence felt.

While the LDF seeks a third consecutive term, the UDF aims to end the Communist regime, as Kerala traditionally alternates governments every five years.

BJP is hoping to build on its momentum from last December's stunning victory in the Thiruvananthapuram Mayoral election to carve out a significant presence in the state assembly.

Puducherry Contest

In Puducherry, BJP aims to return to power through an alliance with N. Rangaswamy's NR Congress and Tamil Nadu’s AIADMK.

The ruling coalition will contest against the Congress-DMK alliance for 30 seats, while actor-turned-politician Vijay’s party, TVK, makes its electoral debut.
