J&K: Mehbooba Mufti declared Chief Ministerial candidate by PDP

| | Mar 24, 2016, at 11:10 pm
Srinagar, Mar 24 (IBNS) Ending a prolonged impasse in Jammu and Kashmir, the People's Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday declared Mehbooba Mufti as Chief Ministerial candidate. .
The decision comes after a crucial meeting in Srinagar of the party's legislators.

The party  also unanimously nominated her as the leader in the state legislature, a constitutional requirement before she stakes claim to power.

Mufti will become the state's first woman Chief Minister.

Mufti, hours ahead of the meeting, had visited her father and former chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed's grave in the ancestral hometown of Bijbehara in south Kashmir Anantnag district.

The BJP and PDP had agreed to the "agenda for alliance" when they joined hands last year to govern Jammu and Kashmir. That partnership was engineered by Mufti Mohammad Saeed, the then chief minister and Mehbooba's father, who died in early January this year. Mehbooba Mufti has since refused to take oath as chief minister till some key demands of her party are met by the Centre.

BJP and PDP had joined hands last year after no party got a majority in state elections. The PDP is the largest party with 28 seats - now 27 following Sayeed’s death - in the 87-member house. The BJP is second with 25 seats.

BJP in Jammu and Kashmir is quite happy with PDP’s move after Mehbooba’s meeting with Prime Minister.

“We are happy that government will start work soon after the death of mufti, and hiccups between PDP and BJP over some new demands which was put fourth by the party leader,” said BJP leader.

He further said, “We are in Kashmir and it is our duty to work as per “Agenda of Alliance” in the state.
