Jammu and Kashmir: Encounter ensues in Sopore during CASO

Baramulla, May 18 (UNI) Encounter ensued on Saturday between militants and security forces during a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in apple township of Sopore in this north Kashmir district, official sources said.

On a tip-off about the presence of militants troops of 22 Rashtriya Rifles (RR), CRPF and Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police launched a joint search operation at Hathlangoo, Sopore, this morning. All the exit points were sealed and house-to-house searches launched, they said.

Two militants are holed up in the area, the sources said.

A police spokesman said militants fired towards security force search party when the operation was going on. Security forces also retaliated ensuing in an encounter, he said, adding that further details are awaited.

Meanwhile, additional security forces and state police personnel have been deployed in Sopore and adjacent areas to prevent demonstrators. Mobile internet service has also been suspended in Sopore as a precautionary measure to prevent rumours.
