I am the daughter of India: Sania Mirza
Hyderabad, July 25 (IBNS): After the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) objected to tennis star Sania Mirza being projected as the Brand Ambassador of the new state of Telangana, the sports sensation has said she is the 'daughter of India'.
Reacting over the remarks of her being called the daughter-in-law of Pakistan, Sania told CNN-IBN channel, "I am the daughter of India and will always remain the daughter of India."
Sania said it hurts her to justify her patriotism.
"Hope this is the last time I have to come out and talk about it. It is unfair to ask someone to keep justifying or keep reiterating their patriotism unnecessarily. I have made it very clear who I am playing for and what passport I have. This is very hurtful," she said.
"A brand ambassador is not chosen on the basis of where you are from. I only have it in mind to make Telangana a better state," she said.
Earlier reacting in a statement, she said it hurts her that time is being wasted on petty issues.
"It hurts me that so much precious time of prominent politicians and the media is being wasted on a petty issue of my being appointed the Brand Ambassador of my State of Telangana. I sincerely believe that this precious time should be spent on solving the more urgent issues of our State and country," she said.
BJP legislative party chief K Laxman said they are opposed to her role as a brand ambassador since she is a non-local.
BJP apparently also objected to her being a daughter-in-law of Pakistan since Sania is married to Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik.
