German Ambassador takes up Rice Bucket challenge
Commensurate with the level of Germany’s development cooperation with India, Ambassador Steiner has raised the bar: 392 families of Vivekanand Camp in Chanakyapuri have received a bucket with 5kg of rice each, on Tuesday.
After distributing buckets of rice, Ambassador Steiner said: “Unfortunately, our society still accepts poverty as unavoidable – we have to change that!”
Ambassador Steiner emphasized that Germany is committed to sustainability: “The Federal Government has been funding Slum upgrading projects with 72.5 crore rupees. Their focus is on sanitation and waste water - since this is a very critical area in order to improve health standards in slum areas.”
In addition to that, the Ambassador announced that another slum upgrading project, to which Germany wants to dedicate 27 crore rupees, is being prepared.
In total, the German Government supports numerous Indian citizens’ striving to improve their lives with more than 8000 crore rupees annually.
In view of the current catastrophic flooding in Kashmir, Ambassador Steiner used the occasion to announce that he had spontaneously decided on Tuesday that the German Embassy will make immediately available 25 Lakhs rupees for a basic health care package for our Kashmiri friends.
These funds will go to the Embassy’s longstanding partner, the hospital in Baramulla.
