Kolkata/IBNS: Former West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee slapped her own party worker during a protest march in Kolkata on Wednesday.

The protest, led by Banerjee, was organised over the alleged rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl in Baruipur.

The rally also witnessed clashes between BJP and TMC supporters, prompting police intervention.

A video of the incident shows a TMC worker attempting to control the crowd and create a passage for Banerjee as she walked through supporters during the march.

Moments later, Banerjee appears to lose her temper and slap the worker before continuing with the procession.

The footage was also shared by BJP MP Raju Bista, who criticised Banerjee over the incident.

"Mamata Banerjee slapped a man during a TMC protest. The man was trying to control the crowd and make way for Mamata. But Mamata lost her cool and slapped her own party worker," Bista wrote in a post on X.

With conditional permission from the Calcutta High Court, the Trinamool Congress's Kalighat faction held a protest rally from Ballygunge Phari to Hazra More in south Kolkata, demanding justice in connection with the alleged rape and murder of a minor girl in Baruipur.

During the march, eggs were reportedly thrown at the TMC rally, adding to the tension surrounding the rally.

BJP and TMC workers clash

The demonstration also saw confrontations between BJP workers and members of the TMC youth wing.

According to reports, BJP supporters repeatedly attempted to obstruct the rally by raising "thief" slogans and forming human barricades along Hazra Road, the route taken by the procession.

As tensions escalated, supporters of both parties were seen engaging in physical altercations.

Police personnel intervened and carried out a baton charge to disperse the groups and restore order.

Mamata Banerjee alleges 'planned rampage'

Following the clashes, Banerjee accused the BJP of orchestrating violence during the protest.

Condemning the alleged attacks on TMC supporters, she claimed the BJP carried out a "planned rampage" in which both men and women were assaulted.

She also alleged that "the city police" remained "mute spectators" during the violence, accusing the force of failing to intervene effectively as tensions escalated during the march.
