Delhi building collapse horror: 1 dead, 2 critical as rescue operation intensifies

Four people rescued from the collapsed building site were taken to the Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Centre (JPNATC) at AIIMS for treatment, officials told The Indian Express.

Of the four, one was a rescuer who was treated and discharged, two remained in critical condition, while one was brought dead, the newspaper reported.

Sources told The Indian Express that the building housed a hostel named ‘Hostel Daze’ and was owned by Azad Bansal.

Investigators suspect that renovation work and excavation in the basement may have weakened the building’s lower supports, sources said.

Teams from the Delhi Fire Services, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Police and other agencies have launched a rescue operation to locate and evacuate people who may be trapped beneath the debris.

“At around 1:34 pm, a PCR call was received regarding the building collapse near Nanakpura Gurudwara. The NDRF team has also reached and rescue and relief operations are underway,” DCP South West Amit Goel told The Indian Express.

“The exact number of persons trapped is not known at present. Two persons have been rescued so far,” Goel said.

Several vehicles parked around the building at the time of the collapse were also reportedly damaged.

CM Rekha Gupta reacts

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed concern over the incident and said multiple agencies had been mobilised for the rescue operation.

In a post on X, she said, “Deeply concerned by the building collapse incident at Satya Niketan, RK Puram.”

“Teams from DDMA, NDRF, Delhi Fire Services, Delhi Police, MCD, CATS and Civil Defence are carrying out rescue operations on a war footing,” she said.

Gupta added that the adjacent building had been evacuated as a precautionary measure.

“Every possible effort is being made to safely rescue those trapped and provide immediate assistance to the affected families,” she said, adding that the situation was being closely monitored.

AAP claims 30-40 students may be trapped

Aam Aadmi Party Delhi unit president Saurabh Bharadwaj also expressed concern over the incident.

In a post on X, Bharadwaj said, “Satya Niketan PG building collapse - around 30-40 students under the debris. May God save the lives of young students.”

Rescue and relief operations remain underway, with authorities working to determine the exact number of people trapped beneath the debris.
