Shimla, June 17 (IBNS): Continuing the winning streak of Delhi and Mumbai municipalities, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as victorious in Congress' stronghold Shimla corporation for the first time on Saturday.

The BJP, who was never a dominant force in Shimla corporation, bagged 17 out of 34 seats.

While the Congress got 12 seats, the CPI(M) has been reduced to only a single seat.

Out of remaining seats, four were won by Independents, two of which were Congress rebels.

For the first time, Shimla corporation will have a Mayor from the saffron party.

Out of the total elected representatives of the Council, 50% will be women, this time.

The victory in the Corporation will further boost BJP for the assembly election of Himachal Pradesh this year, as they are eyeing on to defeat the Congress led government.

Congratulating his party, PM Modi tweeted to say, "BJP's victory in the Shimla Municipal Corporation is historic & yet again reflects people's faith in development politics".

"I thank the people of Shimla for their support to BJP & congratulate @BJP4Himachal Karyakartas & leaders for their hardwork" he added in a follow up tweet.

BJP president Amit Shah said on Twitter: "Gratitude to the people of Shimla for their faith in BJP. Result also reflects mood of Himachal and trust in PM Modi's development politics."
