Guwahati, July 9 (IBNS) : A twenty four-hour statewide shutdown (bandh) called by the All Assam Koch Rajbongshi Students’ Union (AKRASU) disrupted normal lives in many parts of Assam on Monday.

The bandh has been called with the demands of a separate state Kamatapur and inclusion of the community in the list of Scheduled Tribes (ST).

The bandh, which started at 5 am, turned violent after protesters pelted stones on the vehicles in different parts of lower Assam districts.

The protesters came out to the streets and blocked the roads by burning tyres in Dhubri, Baksa, Bongaigaon, Barpeta and Goalpara districts.

An AKRASU leader said that both the Centre and the state government have cheated people of Koch Rajbongshi community.

The leader said: “The Koch Rajbongshi community people are depriving to get ST status and we are demanding a separate Kamatapur state. But the government has cheated us and conspiracy made against us.

"If the government will not fulfil our demands, we will take weapons to protect our community."
