Guwahati, June 5 (IBNS): Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal unveiled a statue of General Lachit Borphukan at Dinjan Military Station, the Headquarter of 2 Mountain Division in Tinsukia district on Monday.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Sonowal lauded the initiative of the 2 Mountain Division of Indian Army and termed the move as a moment of pride for the people of Assam.

Stating that installation of the statue would help in spreading the heroic achievements of Lachit Borphukan amongst the youth, the Chief Minister emphasised the need for concerted efforts to project the valour, patriotism and sacrifice of this great General in the national platform.

“Lachit Borphukan was one of the greatest warriors of world history. His heroics cannot be restricted by territorial limitations. Like Chatrapati Shivaji, Lachit Borphukan also valiantly fought against the Mughals and created a niche for himself in the annals of Indian history,” Sonowal said.

Sonowal further said that Lachit Borphakuan was an embodiment of Assamese pride and courage. His patriotism was unmatchable and his gallantry would continue to inspire generations to come.

He also called upon the youth to follow the ideals of Lachit Borphukan and positively contribute in nation building exercise.

Coinciding the statue unveiling ceremony, a documentary on Lachit Borphukan was also screened.

Apart from many senior officers of Indian Army, MP Rameswar Teli, Pradan Baruah and several MLAs were present on the occasion.
