Army calls in as clash over Friday prayer in Hailakandi
Guwahati, May 11 (IBNS): The Army has been called to maintain peace following the communal clash took place in southern Assam’s Hailakandi town, which led one person died and 14 others injured on Friday.
The Hailakandi district administration sought the army’s help to maintain peace following yesterday clashes broke out between two religious groups, when some people protested against Friday prayers on a road in front of a mosque, located at Kali Bari point in Hailakandi town.
At least 15 people including few security personnel were injured in the clash and more than 15 vehicles were damaged and several shops vandalised by the mob.
The mob also set several vehicles on fire.
According to the reports, one among the injured persons was succumbed to his injuries at Silchar Medical College and Hospital last night and the deceased person was identified as 18-year-old Jashim Uddin.
Meanwhile, internet service has been suspended in the entire Barak Valley following the clashes.
Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has ordered an inquiry into the incident and asked Additional Chief Secretary of the state government Rajiv Bora to probe it.
The clash broke out after a group of people had decided to hold the Friday prayers on a road in front of a mosque in protest against of some motorcycles being damaged by people belonging to another community and some people had protested against the prayers on the road.
The people of both religious groups had attacked each other and pelted stones.
When the situation turned violent, the police had resorted lathi charge and firing in the air to disperse the mob.
The mob had also attacked security personnel.
Hailakandi district Deputy Commissioner Keerthi Jalli said that, additional forces have been deployed to maintain peace.
“We are appealing all the people to maintain peace and be safe. I and the Superintendent of Police (SP) will look it and there will be no problem. We will take action against the people those involved in the incident. Please maintain peace,” Jalli said.
Following the incident, the district administration had clamped curfew in the district from 6 pm on Friday till 7 pm on May 12.
