After row over 'Hindi imposition', Centre revises draft education policy
New Delhi, Jun 3 (IBNS): Following the widespread protests against the Centre's move to make learning Hindi language mandatory in schools, the government on Monday revised the Draft National Education Policy and removed the reference to the language, media reports said.
In the new draft, students will have the option to choose any language they want to learn. Earlier, the draft had said students till Class 8 will have to learn three languages including English and Hindi.
The move was perceived specially by southern states as an imposition of Hindi, leading to the eruption of #StopHindiImposition on Twitter.
DMK chief MK Stalin had earlier warned the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which runs the Centre, that it will suffer a huge disaster if tries to impose Hindi.
The Indian government on Saturday clarified that it is committed for equal development and promotion of all Indian languages and there will be no imposition of any language in educational institutions, nor discrimination against any language.
Meanwhile, the government, in its statement had said, "This is a draft Policy submitted by the Committee and is placed for views of the general public. It is not the Policy announced by Government. After getting feedback from general public, and after consulting State Governments, the National Education Policy will be finalised by Government."
"Government under the leadership of Shri Narendra Modi is committed for equal development and promotion of all Indian languages. There will be no imposition of any language in educational institutions, nor discrimination against any language," it said.
