Pulwama, Sep 2 (IBNS): Three militants were killed in an encounter with security forces in a village at Pulwama district of Jammu & Kashmir, media reports said.

A fierce gun battle between security forces and armed militants started early Tuesday morning. The ultras were were holed up in a village in Pulwama district of south Kashmir, reports said.

According to sources, the security forces launched a search drive on Monday late evening in the Rajpora area acting on a specific tip off that three local militants were hiding in the region.

The militants  reportedly opened fire to break the security blanket.

A joint team of the army and police officers cordoned off the entire area laying concertina wires.

Search lights were also put up around the village of Hajan Balla to stop the movement of militants under the cover of darkness.

Army sources said, the operation was halted for several hours during the night, which resumed Tuesday early morning.

The exchange of bullets continued for about 5 hours before the last militant was killed.

If media reports are to be believed, top Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) commander Altaf Rather was among the dead terrorists.
