OpenAI's growth story in India: ChatGPT crosses massive 100 million weekly users mark

| @indiablooms | Feb 21, 2026, at 05:10 pm

US-based Artificial Intelligence firm OpenAI has said its ChatGPT platform is used by more than 100 million users weekly in India.

In a statement issued by the company, the firm said: "India is now home to more than 100 million weekly ChatGPT users, from students and teachers to developers and entrepreneurs."

OpenAI announced the figures amid the government-hosted India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, which was attended by the company's CEO Sam Altman.

To better serve users and partners in India, OpenAI says it plans to open new offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru later this year, alongside its existing presence in New Delhi.

“India is already leading the way in AI adoption, and with its homegrown tech talent, optimism about what AI can do for the country, and strong government support, it is well placed to help shape its future and how democratic AI is adopted at scale. Through OpenAI for India, we’re working together to build the infrastructure, skills, and local partnerships needed to build AI with India, for India, and in India,"  said Sam Altman in the statement.

Meanwhile, Altman met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi to discuss the country’s growing AI ecosystem.

After the meeting, Altman wrote on X: “Great meeting with PM @narendramodi today to talk about the incredible energy around AI in India.”

He also noted that India is OpenAI’s fastest-growing market for Codex globally.

“India is our fastest growing market for Codex globally, up 4x in weekly users in the past two weeks alone,” Altman posted.

Modi described the interaction as “a very good meeting indeed,” adding on X: “India is making immense strides in the world of AI. We invite the world to invest in our talented youth and add vigour to this sector.”
