iPhone 17 price shock in India: Apple hikes prices by up to Rs. 22,000 after new launch
New Delhi/IBNS: Tech giant Apple has hiked the prices of several existing iPhone models, including the iPhone 17, in India following the launch of its newer-generation phones on Wednesday.
Apple unveiled its latest Pro models at its “Surprise and Shine” event, introducing a series of hardware upgrades over last year’s Pro models.
The new iPhones are powered by Apple’s latest A20 Pro chipset and feature the company’s new in-house C2 modem.
iPhone 17 gets Rs. 17,000 price hike
As Apple introduced its latest iPhone lineup, the price of the iPhone 17 in India was increased by Rs. 17,000 for the 256GB variant, rising from ₹82,900 to ₹99,900.
The 512GB variant has also become significantly more expensive, with its price increasing from ₹1,02,900 to ₹1,24,900 — a hike of Rs. 22,000.
Existing models affected
The starting price of the iPhone 17 has increased from ₹82,900 to ₹99,900, while the iPhone 17e is now priced at ₹79,900, up from ₹69,900.
The iPhone Air now starts at ₹1,49,900, compared to its earlier starting price of ₹1,19,900. Meanwhile, the starting price of the iPhone 16 has increased from ₹69,900 to ₹79,900.
Apple has also discontinued the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max following the launch of their newer-generation successors.
Why has Apple increased iPhone prices?
The price hikes come amid a global memory-chip shortage and sharply higher memory costs.
Memory and DRAM prices have surged as demand from AI data centres has increased, putting pressure on supplies available for consumer electronics, including smartphones.
The increase in component costs has raised manufacturing expenses for smartphone makers. Reports suggest Apple had absorbed some of the additional costs earlier but has now passed part of the increase on to consumers through higher iPhone prices.
The move is notable because Apple typically reduces the prices of older iPhone models when it introduces a new generation.
This time, the company has retained the iPhone 17 as its standard non-Pro flagship, while the base iPhone 18 has not been introduced alongside the latest Pro models.
As a result, consumers in India will now have to pay significantly more for some existing iPhone models, with the iPhone 17 seeing one of the steepest increases.
