A new analysis by Comparitech of more than 2 billion passwords leaked in 2025 has found that simple and predictable passwords remain widely used globally.

The most common passwords include “123456”, “12345678”, “123456789”, “admin”, “1234”, “Aa123456”, “12345” and “password”.

The researchers also noted a sharp rise in region-specific weak passwords such as “India@123”, which emerged as one of the most frequently used in India.

The report said nearly one-quarter of the top 1,000 passwords consisted only of numerical strings, while 38.6% contained the sequence “123”.

Another 2% included “321”, and 3.1% contained the letters “abc”.

Security experts warn that such passwords are highly vulnerable to automated cracking tools.

They advise using unique passwords of at least 12 characters that combine upper- and lower-case letters, numbers and symbols, and enabling two-factor authentication to reduce the risk of account breaches.
