USS Little Rock leaves for Florida after 3 months

Ottawa/Washington, Apr 1 (IBNS): American warship USS Little Rock, which had been trapped by ice at the port of Montreal since Christmas eve, finally left for its home port in Florida Saturday after spending more than three months in Montreal, media reports said.

Concerned for the safety of the ship and crew, officials decided to wait until weather conditions improved before allowing the warship to continue its journey to Mayport, Florida, a spokeswoman for the navy said.

The Little Rock is expected to reach Florida early next month after making several port visits along the way.

In a statement, the navy thanked Monteal for the hospitality it showed to the stranded crew.

“We greatly appreciate the support and hospitality of the city of Montreal, the Montreal Port Authority and the Canadian Coast Guard,” said the ship’s commanding officer Todd Peters.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to further enhance our strong partnership,” he said.

In response to the complaints from nearby condo dwellers about the constant noise from the vessel’s generators during the cold winter, the ship’s technical staff in February had reportedly made necessary adjustments to a soundproofing, acoustic barrier wall surrounding the generators to minimize the noise.
