US government shuts down for second time within a month

Washington, Feb 9 (IBNS): The US government has officially shut down following the Congress' failure to meet the deadline to vote on a budget, media reports said.

This is the second time in three weeks time when the US government has shut down.

The lawmakers could not withstand the last-minute objections from Republican Senator Rand Paul.

The bill, which is to be passed in the House, proposes an increase in expenditure on defence and domestic services.

In late February, as the Senate failed to agree on a new budget, the US government on Saturday commenced the move of shutting down many of its services.

Amid disputes over the issues of immigration and border security, a bill to fund the federal government until Feb 16 failed to receive the required 60 votes.
