United States officially rejoins Paris Climate Accord

| @indiablooms | Feb 20, 2021, at 12:42 am

Washington/UNI: The United States on Friday officially rejoined the Paris agreement on climate change, the US Embassy in India said.

The Paris Agreement is a legally binding international treaty on climate change. It was adopted by 196 Parties at COP 21 in Paris, on Dec 12, 2015 and entered into force on Nov 4, 2016.

Its goal is to limit global warming to well below 2, preferably to 1.5 degrees Celsius, compared to pre-industrial levels.

US President Joe Biden had signed executive orders to join the Paris climate accord on his very first day at the oval office.

Earlier, the United States under the presidentship of Donald Trump had denounced the agreement in 2020.

"Now, as momentous as our joining the Agreement was in 2016 -- and as momentous as our rejoining is today -- what we do in the coming weeks, months, and years is even more important," Secretary of State Tony Blinken said in a statement.
