Taipei/UNI: Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen on Saturday said "democratic Taiwan" will not bow to China's pressure.

In her New Year Day's address, she said, "We will make Taiwan even better and show the world that democratic Taiwan has the courage to step out from the shadow of authoritarian China, and that we will not bow to pressure."

She also expressed concern over the recent arrests of Hong Kong journalists and said, "The pursuit of democracy and freedom is not a crime, and Taiwan's position in support of Hong Kong will not change."

Last week, over 100 police officers arrived at the office of the outlet and arrested journalists, including the incumbent editor-in-chief, and four former members of the board of the outlet, according to Sputnik.

"We will continue to monitor the situation in Hong Kong. Interference in the recent elections for the members of its Legislative Council's upcoming term has prompted further concerns about Hong Kong's democratic development," the Taiwan President said.

She also urged China to stop its "military incursions and diplomatic pressure".

She said 'Resilient Taiwan, One with the World' would be the theme of this New Year's celebration.
