Sri Lanka's Defence Secretary resigns after suicide bomb attacks

Colombo, Apr 25 (IBNS):  Sri Lankan Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando on Thursday said that he has resigned taking responsibility for the series of suicide bomb attacks in the country's capital city last Sunday, media reports said.

He told media that security agencies had responded to intelligence reports about the possibility of attacks ahead of the fateful Sunday.

The death toll in the Sri Lankan blasts incidents has touched 359.

As per BBC report, the number of injured people in the blasts stood at 500.

Police have identified eight out of nine attackers - one of whom was a woman - with no foreigners among them.

So far, 60 people have been arrested in connection with the attacks.

On Easter Sunday, Sri Lanka was left shocked when eight blasts hit the Island Nation.

The target of the blasts were also three churches in the country.

The Islamic State group has taken responsibility for the incidents.
