SK Sinha resigns as Chief Justice of Bangladesh

Dhaka, Nov 11 (IBNS): Chief Justice of Bangladesh Surendra Kumar Sinha has stepped down from his position, media reports said on Saturday.

He quit the post amid criticism over a top court verdict scrapping a constitutional amendment.

He had taken leave from his job last month.

Sinha left for Australia on Oct 13, local media reports said.

He has become the first top judge in Bangladesh to step down from his position.

Sinha was appointed to the post in January 2015.

His tenure was scheduled to end on Jan 31, 2018.

He came under fire from the ruling party after the Supreme Court scrapped a constitutional amendment to sack higher court judges, bdnews24.com reported.

Sinha's leave period ended on Nov 10.
