Washington: Facebook-owned messaging service Whatsapp on Tuesday clarified that its privacy policy update does not affect the privacy of users' messages with friends or family.

The messaging service issued the clarification amid reports that several users have alleged that their private messages with family and friends were leaked on search engines.

"Our privacy policy update does not affect the privacy of your messages with friends or family," the messaging service tweeted.

"We want to address some rumors and be 100% clear we continue to protect your private messages with end-to-end encryption," it said.

Whatsapp is a popular messaging service.
