Prime Minister Mark Carney to attend FIFA World Cup 2026 Final Draw in Washington

Ottawa/IBNS: Prime Minister Mark Carney will travel to Washington, D.C., on December 5 to represent Canada at the Final Draw ceremony for the FIFA World Cup 2026, the federal government announced Tuesday.

The draw will determine matchups for next year’s tournament, which will be co-hosted by Canada, the United States and Mexico.

The 2026 event marks the first time in the World Cup’s 96-year history that matches will be played in Canada.

The expanded tournament will feature 48 national teams competing in 104 matches, including 13 hosted across Canadian venues.

Officials say the event is expected to generate nearly 25,000 jobs and contribute about $2 billion to the Canadian economy.

During his visit, Carney will also join a World Cup celebration and tree-lighting ceremony at the Embassy of Canada, hosted by Canada Soccer and Ambassador Kirsten Hillman.

“Next summer, Canada will open our doors to the world to host the FIFA World Cup – one of the most anticipated sporting events on the planet,” Carney said in a statement.

“This is our moment to unite around our team, our fans, our flag – and show the world everything Canada has to offer.”

The FIFA World Cup 2026 kicks off in June.
