Pakistan declares former PM Nawaz Sharif as ‘absconder’

Islamabad/UNI: Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was on Wednesday declared as an 'absconder' by the Pakistan government for not fulfilling his bail requirements.

This decision was taken at a cabinet meeting presided over by Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Sharif had apparently failed to present his medical reports before a board formed on the directions of the Islamabad High Court.

On Tuesday, the provincial Punjab government had rejected Sharif's application for extension of bail, ruling that his bail period had already lapsed eight weeks ago. The provincial cabinet cited lack of legal or medical basis for its decision.

Sharif had been granted bail for eight weeks on October 29, 2019 by the Islamabad High Court, however a further eight weeks had passed since that bail period had lapsed.

Sharif, a three-time Pakistan Prime Minister, was in 2018, disqualified from holding any public office by the country's Supreme Court.

In December 2018 an anti-corruption court sentenced him to seven years in jail in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills graft case.

Sharif was diagnosed with an immune system disorder – acute immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) in October 2019.
