Lithuania plans to open trade representative office in Taipei

Taipei: Lithuania is planning to open a trade representative office in Taipei, media reports said on Monday.

"We expect to open our trade representative office in Taipei in a couple of months," Deputy Economy and Innovation Minister Jovita Neliupsiene told BNS on Friday as quoted by The Baltic Times.

According to reports, the office could be opened on Sept 12.

You Si-kun, speaker of Taiwan's parliament, also mentioned a similar date when he was quoted as saying: " We agreed to invite the speaker of the Seimas to visit when your representative office opens in Taipei, this October or September."

Beijing, which regards Taiwan as an indivisible part of China, saw the opening of the office with the word "Taiwanese", rather than "Taipei's", in its name as an attempt by the island to act as an independent state, reports The Baltic Times.

Beijing sees Taiwan as a breakaway province.

Taiwan considers itself to be an independent nation.
