Disturbed at recent verdicts in Myanmar, says India over jail term for Aung San Suu Kyi

In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Arindam Bagchi also expressed hope that keeping the future of Myanmar in mind, all sides would make an effort to sit for dialogue.

“We are disturbed at the recent verdicts. As a neighbouring democracy, India has been consistently supportive of the democratic transition in Myanmar.

“We believe that the rule of law and the democratic process must be upheld. Any development that undermines these processes and accentuates differences is a matter of deep concern.

“It is our sincere hope that keeping their nation’s future in mind, efforts would be made by all sides to advance the path of dialogue,” he said.

On Monday, Myanmar's junta jailed Suu Kyi for four years for incitement against the military and breaching Covid rules.

Her sentence has been reduced from four years to two years.

Suu Kyi faces 11 charges in total and has denied them all.

She has been in detention since a military coup on February 1 ousted her elected civilian government.

She was handed a four year sentence by a court on Monday morning, but junta chief Min Aung Hlaing later reduced it to two years.

She is being held at an undisclosed location.

Former president Win Myint was also jailed for four years on the same charges.
