Colorado rally attacker Mohammed Sabry Soliman planned it for a year: Reports

| @indiablooms | Jun 03, 2025, at 09:31 am

Mohammed Sabry Soliman, the man accused of throwing Molotov cocktails at demonstrators attending a march for Israeli hostages in the US state of Colorado on Sunday, planned the attack for a year, media reports said.

Soliman made a brief appearance in the court on Monday.

This was the least attack on the American-Jewish community.

Soliman attacked a weekly demonstration held by Run for Their Lives.

The rally was held to create awareness about Israeli hostages who Hamas still holds following the October 7, 2023 attack.

At least eight people were hurt in the attack.

The eldest of the victims is a Holocaust survivor, Rabbi Israel Wilhelm, the Chabad director at the University of Colorado Boulder, told the BBC's US partner CBS News.

According to reports, Soliman arrived in California on a non-immigrant visa. It expired in February 2023.

Homeland security officials said he filed for asylum a month after arriving, but did not provide details about the outcome of that immigration case or whether it was resolved, reported BBC.

Attorney General Pamela Bondi's Remarks

Bondi said in a statement: "The Department of Justice has swiftly charged the illegal alien perpetrator of this heinous attack with a federal hate crime and will hold him accountable to the fullest extent of the law. Our prayers are with the victims and our Jewish community across the world."

"This vile anti-Semitic violence comes just weeks after the horrific murder of two young Jewish Americans in Washington DC. We will never tolerate this kind of hatred. We refuse to accept a world in which Jewish Americans are targeted for who they are and what they believe," Bondi said.

Soliman is being charged with a federal hate crime in addition to facing state charges for attempted murder in Colorado.

Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon's Remark

Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon said: "No American should experience violence motivated by hatred based on their faith or national origin, and the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice will act swiftly and decisively to bring the perpetrators of such crimes to justice. There can be zero tolerance for such acts in our great nation."

Attack On Israeli Embassy Staff Members In The US

The latest attack occurred just days after two Israeli Embassy staff members were killed in the US last month.

The victims were identified as Israeli diplomats Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim.

They were attacked outside the Jewish National Museum in the US capital, Washington, DC.

The attacker was identified as Elias Rodriguez.

The killings occurred against the backdrop of the war in Gaza, which began on 7 October 2023 following Hamas-led attacks on Israel which left roughly 1,200 people dead while another 250 were taken hostage.  More than 53,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, according to the health authorities.
