Canadian mathematician Robert Langlands wins Abel Prize

Ottawa, Mar 21 (IBNS): Canadian mathematician Robert Langlands has won the Abel Prize for developing a programme that connects representation theory to number theory, media reports said.

The conferment of the prize was informed by Norway's Academy of Sciences and Letters.

The Academy's statement was quoted by The Hindustan Times, "The programme has enlisted hundreds of the world’s best mathematicians over the last 50 years. No other project in modern mathematics has as wide a scope, has produced so many deep results, and has so many people working on it."

The programme suggests a link between number theory and harmonic analysis, which were earlier considered to be not related.

Along with Fields Medal, the Abel Prize is considered to be one of the most recognised awards.
