Canada: TIFF 2020 to have a digital platform, also considering some physical festival

Toronto/IBNS: Organizers of the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF)'s are still planning to have some type of physical festival, but TIFF executive director and co-head Joana Vicente said that it would definitely be going to look different, media reports said.

Vicente said Thursday in a live video conference panel for 'We Are One: A Global Film Festival', in which TIFF artistic director and co-head Cameron Bailey was also present, that like many festivals during the COVID-19 pandemic, a digital platform for TIFF is also being developed, although planning to have some physical festival is still under consideration.

"It's definitely going to look different," Vicente said. "We're trying to figure out how we can still deliver incredible experiences to our audience, and that's really front and center."

Oscar-winning actor Robert De Niro, the co-founder of Tribeca Enterprises, among many others, also participated in 'We Are One: A Global Film Festival'.

'We Are One' is a free festival, produced and organized by TribecaEnterprises and YouTube, and co-curated by TIFF.

The festival starts Friday and runs through June 7.

Bailey said that during the experience of 'We Are One' TIFF has also learned about content and community.

"Many festivals don't make a priority of owning so-called content...whether those are films we've been involved in or talks...You have to have some great stuff that you can share with people online. That's going to be part of the future of any film organization," said Bailey and added the global crisis has resulted in solidarity amongst a very strong community of film festivals.

All of us are in this, said Bailey, because we love film, we love what filmmakers and artists do and this reminds us that we would have more opportunities to get together and collaborate.
