Ottawa/Xinhua: Canada's COVID-19 cases continue to increase steeply, with an average of more than 1,800 new cases being reported daily in the most recent 7 days, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada Tuesday.

New cases in the two most populous provinces of Ontario and Quebec account for over 80 percent of the cases reported nationally over the period.

The number of COVID-19 cases in hospitals and the number of deaths reported daily has also increased. An average of 585 individuals with COVID-19 was in Canadian hospitals on any given day and 14 deaths were reported daily over the past week.

As of Monday afternoon, 1,868 new COVID-19 cases have been reported, bringing the total number of cases to 168,024 in the country, including 9,481 deaths, according to a CTV report.

Quebec province reported Monday that 1,191 more people have tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 24 hours. That's the highest single-day total since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

Today's new cases are the fourth in a row over 1,000 and come two days after the last record-high of 1,107 new cases Saturday.

Quebec also revealed on Tuesday that six more people died of COVID-19, for a total of 5,884 since the start of the pandemic.

Meanwhile, Ontario province recorded 615 new cases of COVID-19 Monday with nearly half of those cases coming from Toronto.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said Monday that he needs to see "hard evidence" before agreeing to shut down indoor dining in the country's largest city, which continues to see a rapid surge of new COVID-19 infections.
