Canada aims to facilitate electric car travel by installing charging stations

Toronto, July 22 (IBNS): The Federal government in Canada has planned to install charging stations on road between Manitoba and Ontario with an aim to boost electric car travel, media reports said.

The project of $17.3-million will be carried out by Fast Charge, a private company.

It aims to install charging stations along 3,000 km of road joining Ontario with Manitoba.

The project will also be supported by the Natural Resources Canada.

In order to make the long distance journeys easier, one charging station will be installed after every 100 km.

Presently, the level 2 charging stations take around six to eight hours to power a vehicle completely. However, the new level 3 stations would take less than 30 minutes to recharge.

Minister of Natural Resources James Carr said: "Canada recognises the key role electric vehicles will play in reducing emissions from the transportation sector."

"With more electric vehicles becoming available, we want to make them as easy choice for Canadians. This strategic investment brings us closer to having a national coast-to-coast network of electric vehicle charging stations," he added.

One of the unique feature of the newly planned charging stations would be the large-format lithium battery energy storage system.

With this, the battery would keep the energy stored and quickly charge when an electric car driver approaches it.
