British PM race: Rishi Sunak tops latest round of voting, contest down to three
London/IBNS: Former UK Finance Minister Rishi Sunak won the latest round of voting to replace British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Tuesday.
With this, lawmaker Kemi Badenoch was eliminated from the contest and this leaves only three contenders for the post.
The British Indian former Chancellor received 118 votes in the fourth round of voting by his party colleagues, just short of the 120-mark – or one-third of Conservative Party MPs – needed to replace Boris Johnson.
Rishi Sunak was elected as Conservative MP for Richmond (Yorks) in 2015, which marked his entry into politics.
The 42-year-old Indian-origin leader got a full cabinet role for the first time when he was picked up by Boris Johnson as Chancellor of the Exchequer in February 2020.
Sunak was also fined for defying Covid-19 lockdown protocols and attending a 10, Downing Street gathering.
