Abrogation of Article 370 is an internal matter of India: Bangladesh

Dhaka: At a time Pakistan is raging a war of words over the doing away of Jammu and Kashmir's special status, Bangladesh maintained the abrogation of Article 370 is entirely an internal matter of India.

Issuing a statement on Wednesday, Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr. A. K. Abdul Momen said, "Bangladesh maintains that the abrogation of Article 370 by the Indian Government is an internal issue of India. Bangladesh has always advocated, as a matter of principle, that maintaining regional peace and stability, as well as development should be a priority for all countries.”

The Indian government on August 5 scrapped Articles 370 and 35A to withdraw the special status which Jammu and Kashmir including Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) enjoyed since Independence.

After New Delhi took the historic decision, Pakistan accused India of denying Kashmiris their basic rights and also took the matter in the international forum.

However, except a subdued response from China, the major countries in the world considered Kashmir as an internal matter of India.

Also India informed both the US and China that the Indian government is entitled to take any decision in Kashmir and it won't affect their bilateral relations.

Meanwhile, India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar went to Bangladesh on Tuesday and met his Bangladeshi counterpart AK Abdul Momen and said his interaction with the neighbouring nation's minister was 'fruitful'. Jaishankar had said Bangladesh and India agreed on safe, speedy and sustainable return of Rohingyas to their place of origin in Myanmar's Rakhine State.
