US Open: No major upset on day 2 as big names enter second round

| | Sep 02, 2015, at 06:59 pm
New York, Sept 2 (IBNS) Day one of the 2015 US Open was a bit topsy-turvy as higher ranked players Kei Nishikori and Ana Ivanovic made shock exits but the second day provided little drama as Roger Federer, Andy Murray and Stanislas Wawrinka from the men's Singles division and Simona Halep, Caroline Wozniacki and Petra Kvitova from the respective women's division stormed into the second round of the ongoing tennis tournament, here on Tuesday.

Halep, who has taken giant strides in tennis over the last two seasons and is currently the number two player in the WTA rankings had it easy when her Kiwi opponent Marina Erakovic retired with the score line of 6-2, 3-0 in Simona’s favor.

The poster boy of the tennis world Roger Federer breezed past his opponent to enter round two. The Swiss did not drop a set in his 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 game against L Mayer of Argentina.

Albert Ramos-Vinolas of Spain tried stretching the third set to a tie breaker but Stan Wawrinka overcame the challenge with some authority posting a 7-5, 6-4, 7(8)-6(6) score line to prevent his opponent from reaching higher rounds.

Fourth seeded Caroline Wozniacki kept it clean against Jamie Loeb. Loeb ended with 2-6, 0-6 to crash out of the grand slam in the opening round.

Petra Kvitova overcame her German opponent L Siegemund with 6-1, 6-1 and made it to round two.

Andy Murray dropped a set against Australia’s Nick Kyrgios but managed to hold on as the third seeded player posted a score line of 7-5, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 to edge past his opponent.
